AL’S COMMENTS:  My spiritual path is what you might call “all-encompassing.” I’ve been a tongue-speaking Charismatic Catholic and a right-leaning Evangelical. I’ve sat in sweat-lodges, done Tantra, walked in the woods, and made yearly pilgrimages to Burning Man. I’ve found God in Saint Peter’s Cathedral (I think it was God there, it kinda looked like him, anyway), in an exotic dancing house, and in flowers and stones. I’ve listened to the wind and it spoke to me. My conclusion: God is everywhere, in everyone, all the places you’d expect and all the places you might never notice. God dances with abandon in places we’ve banished him/her from. I wrote this in the car driving to my parents’ house in northern San Diego County.

Making this into a country song was Scotty’s idea. The whole Willie Nelson-Johnny Cash outlaw thing with that greasy pedal steel just seemed right. Two-step, anyone?

that's why I love god (Click HERE to download/preview the song.)

If God were a dancer
I would worship as her clothes fell to her feet
She would empty out my pockets, take my money, laugh, and give it back to me
Every time she touches me I would touched by grace
It would be so hard to keep me focused on her face
That's why I love God
That's why I love God

If God were an artist
There would be nothing that he could not create
Every school and style, born of earth, and wood and metal, pen and paint
Art to make me feel and think and dream of other lands
Some of his most brilliant work I'll never understand
That's why I love God
That's why I love God

If God were a writer
He would write the longest epoch of all time
But no one would be bored and we'd see our very lives in every line
The good guys are the bad guys and the heroes are a mess
The story's always taking turns no one could ever guess
That's why I love God
That's why I love God
