AL’S COMMENTS:  I have read that ancient Sanskrit has over 90 words for love, and that ancient Persian has about 60, and ancient Greek, three. With English we're limited to one. That shows how much we know about love, relative to these other, more soulful cultures.

When I write a love song, I often try to make it work on a few different levels -- usually I try to have it work on the level of love between Man and Woman (Eros, in Greek) and the love between God and Man (Koinonia, in Greek). "Such is My Love," for me, is primarily God's love song to humanity, but it says so much to me about all the crazy ways we love each other.

There's also a subtle current about things not being quite as they seem, alongside a greater truth: Is not the star really giant, and the earth, small by comparison? The prostitute's time may cost you a few hundred bucks, but is not her life as priceless as the Pope's? Something fun to chew on when you have a few idle moments over a pot of herbal tea...

A different version of this song, with my deepest most Leonard-Coheney voice, was the "ghost track" on "Gift." (Buy "Gift" on CDBaby.com.) This version is closer to how I wrote it. Nice violin by Brenda K, who played bass in my live band in LA. Talented gal, she is! Someday I'd like to have this song done as a Who-style hard rock number.
