AL’S COMMENTS:  I wrote this one a long time ago.

Michael Ventura's "Letters at 3 AM" column used to be featured in the LA Weekly in the late 80s and early 90s. In one column, if I remember correctly, he discussed the ever-changing nature of individuals and the challenge of love's capacity to keep up with them.

In these mercurial times, can love keep up with people who are constantly challenging themselves toward growth and wholeness, when often the primary relationship is between a self and its identity? I think sometimes the relationship itself has a say in how things transpire. Although my own experience of love has been weighted toward, um, numerous short-term, rather than a few long-term relationships, I entertain the belief that the relationship itself has the deciding vote and that love has an agenda all its own.

J.T.'s barrelhouse piano and percussive Hammond Organ tracks slammed so hard that no guitar was necessary for this track. Does J.T. not rock, I ask you??? Scotty had the great idea of arranging this one as a shuffle. He rocks hard as well. Sweet background vox from Joe and Andrew, a couple of my buddies from Kulak's Woodshed.

CHORUS
How can I say I love you, how can I say I do
I'm always changing, you're always changing
And every day love is something new

You know that most days I'm just fine
You get lots of love and affection
I'll be just as sweet as confection, but
You've seen me change so many times
I get so blue and so brooding
I get so jaded and moody, so (chorus)

I know that most days you're the best
I get lots of love and attention
Your kisses are too sweet to mention
But sometimes you put me to the test
You get so caught up in your own thing
You get this queen-on-your-throne thing, so (chorus)

They say that love's its own reward
(ooooh) They say love is more than a feeling (much more)
it's something that sends fear a-reeling (no fear)
True love is carefree and wild (so wild)
It's found in the eyes of a child (so pure)
It's better to have loved and lost (just love)
True love is worth any cost (believe)
Love makes the world go around (let go)
Worth more than gold, pound for pound (so clear)
Closely connected with God (just pray)
Makes me scream out for your body (oooh God!)
I guess all these things can be true
So true, girl just like me and you, so

How can I say I love you, how can I say I do
I'm always changing, you're always changing
And every day love is something new
Something new, Something new, Something new
