AL'S COMMENTS: Phenomenal songwriter/guitarist Earl Grey is another old buddy of mine from the Iguana Café days. He was dating another singer/songwriter (a woman, I should mention for whatever reason, but I will not name name) in the community at the time, and took awhile getting back to me when I called him. Driving south on the 405 approaching the 10, this song came to me. I always thought it would be great for a woman to cover it... a whole new take on the meaning of the song.

For you guitar geeks out there, the guitar track, played through a Leslie organ speaker, is actually doubled. It's so tight you can barely tell. Sometimes I surprise even myself!

GIRLFRIEND MODE (Click HERE to preview/download the song.)

CHORUS:

When he’s in girlfriend mode
He never calls his friends
When he’s in girlfriend mode
He never calls his friends

He boards a ship, set sail for sea
He’s hoping to find his destiny
Forgetting his debts, forgetting supplies
Taking no leave and hearing no cries
But I truly hope my friend finds
Just what he needs
I hope his dreams will not erode
After the girlfriend mode

He builds a temple made of glass
The fragile foundation starts to crack
Fed by his dreams, and nourished by need
He works and works, no warning he heeds
But I truly hope my friend finds just what he needs
I hope his dreams will not erode
After the girlfriend mode

Chorus

In Lotus Land they drink their wine
(In their own world they drink Merlot)
Their lives are one, their love is blind
(They just won’t see, they just don’t know)
The city’s in ruins, they dance on the rubble
(The place is a mess, they roll in the dirt)
There is no fighting, there is no trouble
(He bares her breast, she tears his shirt)
But I truly hope my friend finds just what he needs
I hope his dreams will not erode
After the girlfriend mode

Chorus

He never calls his friends
He never calls his friends
